Everyone knows that vacations are good for your emotional, physical, and emotional health, but many overlook the benefits of a staycation, or seeking out a local hotel or AIRBNB. In the past year as time in our own homes has increased, so has our need for a COVID-safe staycation. It's incredible how one weekend away, even locally, can help improve your mood and leave you feeling re-charged for the week to come.
The two main things to look for in a COVID-safe weekend away are: contactless check-in's and booking flexibility (or if it's an AIRBNB, a flexible host). Separate of what to look for with the venue, there are several other details to consider before traveling that you can find from the CDC here HERE . My recommendations for local vacations are to:
Check the local restrictions in your area or the restrictions of where you're traveling.
Plan a trip that requires minimal contact with others by seeking out private locations and activities.
WEAR A MASK when you're around others!
Okinawa is scattered with plenty of villas, resorts, tree houses, and unique AIRBNBS, but there was one that fit all of the parameters I was looking for and that was the private villa AIRBNB on Miyagi Island. In addition to being COVID-safe, the weekend was relaxing, affordable, and in an absolutely magical location.
Our original trip was booked for the last weekend in January (our wedding anniversary weekend) but unfortunately due to restriction changes, and overseas trainings, we had to postpone. Thankfully our super flexible host had no issue approving our change-of-date request to the last weekend in February. Our weekend getaway was met with a rooftop jacuzzi, hammocks, and traditional Japanese tatami mats, to name a few features.
According to the full listing (see the full AIRBNB listing HERE) the villa accommodates up to 9 people however after seeing how small the space is, I would disagree. It was the perfect size for my husband and I but I wouldn't recommend the space for a large group. The listing states that there are 3 bedrooms, but the rooms are actually: one small bedroom, one dining room, and one large living room (that has tables on it). If you do plan to go with a large group, just prepare yourselves for close-quarters.
We paid $229/night, which was cheaper than many of the other villas here on Okinawa. It is located on Tonnaha Beach, and extremely private! In the 'on-season' there are vendors and a picnic area, however at the end of February it was closed off. Since there isn't food walking distance from the villa, plan to pack groceries with you. The host truly is a 'super host', they left a thoughtful welcome picnic basket for us, and provided us with a list of nearby vendors to help support local business.
